FROM ZEUS TO EARTH AND FROM CHILE
October 1st – December 31st
This fall in our new temporary
exhibition we present an exhibition of fossils and minerals from the private
collection of Kostas Manakos. The collector, a respected geologist has brought
together 330 items from around the globe.
In the ILJM we find very
intriguing a collection focusing our natural environment and its resources,
their evolution and effect on today’s planet. The exhibits are described by
their chemical composition, place of origin, general category to which they
performed crucially on our planets composition and finally on their specific
use in the ancient and modern years.
It is interesting to note that
many of these have been used throughout the history of art by artists and
jewelers to decorate works with significant stories to tell. Especially
minerals such the amethyst and the obsidian can be found in the permanent collections
of the museum, where Lalaounis incorporated them for the decoration of many of
The wonders of the world start
from simple rock formations and that is why the collector has gathered his from
all continents, the North Pole and has even a meteorite found in Saudi Arabia
dating 4.55 billion yo. From Brazil and Peru to Canada India and China to
Australia, from Aetna to Vesuvius until the North Pole as well as many from the
Greece encompass a rich unity of amazing forms, colors and designs.
Distinctly we mention that the
oldest piece in the collection from Earth is the “Zebra” rock found only on
Australia 700 million yo. During the exhibition you can find educational
programs for schools, seminars on gemology and workshops.
