FROM ZEUS TO EARTH AND FROM CHILE TO NEAPOLIS

October 1st – December 31st

This fall in our new temporary exhibition we present an exhibition of fossils and minerals from the private collection of Kostas Manakos. The collector, a respected geologist has brought together 330 items from around the globe.

In the ILJM we find very intriguing a collection focusing our natural environment and its resources, their evolution and effect on today’s planet. The exhibits are described by their chemical composition, place of origin, general category to which they performed crucially on our planets composition and finally on their specific use in the ancient and modern years.

It is interesting to note that many of these have been used throughout the history of art by artists and jewelers to decorate works with significant stories to tell. Especially minerals such the amethyst and the obsidian can be found in the permanent collections of the museum, where Lalaounis incorporated them for the decoration of many of his creations.

The wonders of the world start from simple rock formations and that is why the collector has gathered his from all continents, the North Pole and has even a meteorite found in Saudi Arabia dating 4.55 billion yo. From Brazil and Peru to Canada India and China to Australia, from Aetna to Vesuvius until the North Pole as well as many from the Greece encompass a rich unity of amazing forms, colors and designs.

Distinctly we mention that the oldest piece in the collection from Earth is the “Zebra” rock found only on Australia 700 million yo. During the exhibition you can find educational programs for schools, seminars on gemology and workshops.
